United Press International has learned that the CIA
believes Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of the Egyptian terror group al-Jihad, will
assume control of bin Ladin's terrorist finances, operations, plans and
resources. [1]
HEADED BY
Pentagon sources told reporters that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of
Egyptian Jihad, and his family were targeted by US warplanes in
recent days. [2]
Ayman al-Zawahiri and the cryptic message By B Raman
The authenticity of the latest message purported to be of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of al-Jihad
of Egypt, who is number 2 to Osama bin Laden in al-Qaeda, which was
broadcast by the al-Jazeera television station of Qatar on Wednesday,
is yet to be established. [3]
CONNECTIONS
Because of the particularly close links between al-Jihad and al Qaeda,
financial ties between the organizations are probable. [4]
The relationship between al-Zawahiri and bin Laden
was formalized in February 1998 when al-Jihad joined the International Front,
and was sealed in June 2001 when al Qaeda and al-Jihad merged into a
single group, Qaeda al-Jihad. A look at their activities from the
mid-1990s onward confirms the shift: In 1994 al-Jihad militants were
linked to two unsuccessful attempts to bomb the Israeli and U.S.
embassies in Manila. [4]
